My Dog Can LearnIf you have decided to try dog shock collars to help get your pet under control or to train him, you will need to know the different types that are available. Contrary to some beliefs a dog obedience collar is not a cruel way of training your dog. The way the collar is used is up to the person using it and can be a valuable training asset if used correctly. Obviously, using a reward system is preferred but the benefits of  using a training collar can be tremendous.

Let’s look at some types and see which one you think would be best for using with your pet.

Electronic Dog Collar

Electronic dog collars, or simply e-collars, have different levels (and types) of stimulation depending on the use. The collar can be beneficial for keeping your dog  under control or for training him for a specific purpose. The dog that does not listen, runs when you call him and generally misbehaves consistently can benefit from the use of a dog obedience collar. By reinforcing the behavior that you expect from him and once he is used to minding your commands, the need for the collar will probably be gone.

How Dog Obedience Collars Work

Since most people start out teaching their pets the basic commands – sit, stay and no – most dogs catch on to these very quickly. An electronic dog collar that delivers just a small shock can normally convince him of the need to follow the command when he needs a little reminding.  I have found that a shock collar is most effective in bad behavior correction. A collar with a tone (or vibration) alert is ideal because you can use the tone first accompanied with the command. If the command isn’t obeyed, a small shock can follow. This way the dog learns to behave correctly with just a warning tone. Remember, responsible dog training is the only training you should ever employ.

Using Different Types Of Dog Training Collars

Different types of dog shock collars which also include tone and vibration as useful tools for getting your dog to obey have special considerations. You can use tone collars for an audio rather than a verbal command. However, the tone collar can often be heard by other dogs or the sound could be similar to another sound he may hear in the area.

The vibration collar is often used by those who want to give their dogs silent commands. The benefits of this type of dog obedience collar include allowing only him to feel the vibration and know a command is expected. This can help if your pet is among other dogs.

I prefer to use a tone accompanied with a verbal command and reward for proper behavior. If the dog continues to exhibit improper behavior a shock is used only as a last resort. However, this method produces amazing results.

Remote Training Collars

Dog trainer collars can be a valuable asset for training your dog as well as teaching him to obey. This is not the same as stopping problem behavior. When you use an electronic dog collar to train a dog, it basically strengthens the commands you are giving to the dog. This tells him you are expecting him to behave in a certain way. This is totally different from teaching your dog what he is not supposed to be doing.  Remote training collars are used to provide correction from a distance and are often used for training hunting dogs and police K-9 unit dogs.

Invisible Fence Dog Containment

A very popular type of shock collar is commonly used with electronic fences to train a dog to stay within a certain boundary. As the dog approaches the boundary, he will first receive a warning tone. If he continues up to and across the line, he is shocked. This is a highly effective way to contain your dog but does require some training up front.

Is Electronic Collar Training Right For My Dog?

When training a dog, you only want to see a reaction to the command when it is given. If he does not, a small shock, tone or a vibration can be all the encouragement he needs. Reinforcement training is best accompanied by the use of a reward such as treats. Lots of love and verbal reinforcement is an absolute must. Remember, dogs do not have to be mistreated to learn to mind.
